DU Academic Council okays meta-university course

Delhi University’s Academic Council (AC) on Saturday 21 july , approved its first meta-college and meta-university courses, which will commence this academic year. The Council also approved a system, which will allow transfer of credits between DU and other universities, necessary for foreign exchange programmes and partnerships with Indian universities.

“Six members at the meeting expressed dissent at the proposals, tabled for approval. They pointed out procedural lapses in convening the meeting and problems with the course structure,” said Dr Sheo Dutt of the Faculty of Management Studies. “When such emergent meetings are called, we do not get time to prepare and debate on various problems in the proposal. In this case, the opinion of bodies, like the college staff council, was not taken into consideration in deciding course structure. The fee structure of the course was not deliberated upon. In the name of reform and innovation, all democratic institutions are being demolished,” Dutt said. There are 117 members in the Academic Council, of which around 50 attended Saturday’s meeting, Dutt said. The proposals will now be put before Executive Council, which will meet on Sunday.
